Why Are My Kids SO LOUD? (And Why It's Actually Not a Bad Thing)

It starts small. A laugh. A squeal. A happy shriek from the other room. And then, before you know it, it sounds like the final seconds of a tied World Cup match happening inside your house!

Kids. Are. Loud.

Sometimes, it’s joyful noise. Sometimes, it’s chaos. Sometimes, it’s just because they literally have no concept of volume control.

Why though??

Here’s the Deal:

  • Their expression needs somewhere to go. Joy? Excitement? Frustration? All gets expressed at max decibel because they are kids and learning.

  • They’re learning through play. Big emotions = big voices. It’s all part of building their social, emotional, and language skills.

  • They have energy and no taxes or bills. Of course they’re louder than we are!

  • Whispering is basically a PhD-level skill. It takes YEARS to master. (Seriously. Google it. Whispering is hard for kids to do on a consistent basis.)

So What Can You Do Without Losing Your Mind?

  • Teach "indoor voice" vs. "outdoor voice"... but teach it gently and often. It’s not a one-time lesson.

  • Make a game out of it. Practice both voices. “Let’s see if we can talk like mice!” or “Let's have a whisper contest!” "Let's talk like giants in our outdoor voices"

  • Offer loud outlets. If you can, designate a “loud time” or “loud place” where they can go all out (think backyard, basement, park).

  • Take care of yourself. If you’re feeling overstimulated (which is normal!), step away for a breather if you can, maybe YOU go outside for a minute! Your peace matters too.

And honestly? Sometimes the loudness is just a reminder: There’s life here. (Lots of really loud life!) There’s joy here. There’s still a whole lot of growing-up magic happening right under your (ringing) ears.

One day your house will be quiet again. You might even miss the chaos. (Maybe. I mean, I don't, but maybe you will?!)

Until then—earplugs, coffee, and deep breaths, my friend. You’ve got this.
